Back to topic listing Forum - Topic: First time you saw Toby

Welcome one and all. Let's get started by talking about the first time you saw Toby in DC Talk or on his own.

For myself, I remember seeing him open for Degarmo and Key back in 1989. At that time no one knew who the group was, but I was hooked. I remember buying the CD at the concert, my friends would listen to it and could not find it. It gave me an edge at being cool for a few moments until they became more popular.

When we lived in Texas ,
one of the youth in our homeschool group
asked me to take her to the Winter Jam tour
(Toby Mac, Zoegirl, Newsboys,
Krystal Meyers, Hawk Nelson, Newsong).
Texas is a big state,
and we ended up going to a concert
that was closer in Oklahoma.

I had arranged for lodging.
When we arrived,
our room was not ready.
It was around 4PM &
the concert started at 6.
We finally were able to get into our room,
and freshen up the best we could,
since the air conditioner was not working.
We informed the manager, and left for the concert.

When we arrived,
there was an extremely long line.
This was a huge place,
but we wanted to sit in the front.
We later found out that there
had been people there since 2:00
waiting so they could get good seats.

We walked down to the floor,
in front of the stage,
just hoping to get a good seat,
but there was nothing.
A man walked up to us,
and asked if we were looking for seats.
We told him we were,
and he asked how many we needed.
We said 4.
He told us that he had 4 he had been holding,
but the people he was holding the seats for
never showed up.
He said we could have them.
So, we were able to sit in the
"front of the stage" seating.

During a break, Carolyn
(the girl who asked me to take her)
asked if we could go up to the top
of the concert area to look at the tables.
She had prayed to get the autograph
of the lead singer of the Newsboys,
and she was hoping that they would
be at their table (they weren't, of course).

She was also disappointed
because we were in such a rush
leaving the hotel,
that she forgot to bring the Newsboys folder
that she wanted him to sign.

By the time we arrived where the tables were,
the concert had started up again.
This was worse than any rock concert
I had been to when I was a teenager.
People were pressed up against each other
trying to get through.
It took us a several minutes
to get back down to our seating area.
When we got there, people were standing up,
and it was so hard to see.
The "bouncers" kept asking us
if we had seats.
We told them that we did,
but we just couldn't find them.
Finally, I prayed,
"Lord, I'm just going to pick a row...
please let that be the row we are on."
I took a deep breath,
and we sorted through all those people down a row
....it was the right row.
We found our seats.
(LOL--it brings a new meaning to Proverbs 16:9)

Before we left, the people standing next to Carolyn
handed her a Newsboys CD,
and told her that it had been autographed
by each member. She had never told them of her prayer.

When we arrived back at the hotel,
the A/C was fixed, but the heater was on.
I saw the manager in the hotel the following morning,
and she asked us how everything was.
I told her what had happened,
but I wasn't upset at all.
We were having such a good time,
those little things really didn't seem to matter.
When I received my bill,
they had given me the room for half-price.
Praise the Lord.

On the way home, I found a bible outlet store.
I wanted to get something for my youngest daughter,
as she was too young to go to this concert.
I found the perfect item.
It was a Hermie the Wormie bible cover
with a nice book on the inside.
It was missing a price tag,
but it was nicer than all the others
that ranged from $10-20.
I prayed about it, hoping it wouldn't be a lot.
I was hoping they'd just give me a $5 price on it.
When I got to the front,
they actually decided to look it up in their system.
They store clerk said, "I can't believe it--
they're giving it away!"
I said, "What do you mean?"
He said, "It's only $3.88!"

It was such an awesome weekend...
we saw the Lord work so many times
in such amazing ways...He always goes
above and beyond our expectations...

o what a cool question! i first saw toby with dc talk, they were playing with The Winans, and i took my unsaved friend, we ran out of gas on the freeway! i was so focused on getting her there and witnessing to her in the car that i totally didnt realize i had no gas! by the time we finally made it to the concert, the box office was closed and we couldnt buy tickets anymore, but it was almost over so they let us in, we had no seats so we just stood in the very back and well, only got a few songs but it was quite an adventure to share with my friend, who a couple years later, accepted the Lord! now she too, is a toby fan! since then i have seen him about 5 or 6 times, with and without dc talk. toby gives the ultimate show and gets everyone out of their seat! i love the ol skool mixed in with current sounds, cuz you know, since i joined this club, it means i aint no spring chicken!
